The Refurbishment
Photo of Dinah Hamilton

All homes now have to have an en-suite with a shower in all bedrooms, a ten room section with dinning room and lounge, to comply with Government Standards.

Our refurbishment started 13th November 2006 yes it was a Friday. People were moved out of their rooms twice, I was lucky to only have one move. The work was extremely noise we were often woken by drills it was HELL!!!!!!!!!!! The work took nearly a year over the complication date. Everyone choose their own room colour. I have a nice bedroom with a shower. Our lounges (day rooms) and corridors are painted magnolia and white over good wood this makes it look cold, unfriendly and like an institution.

The Support Workers (Care Staff) now write about us and talk us. No one talk to us anymore. We are told they are too busy to talk with us so a small problem just gets bigger and I feel no one, cares anymore.

Changes in the Spring
Photo of Dinah Hamilton

I have lived here at Seven Springs for 13 years. There have been many changes in this time, sadly not often for the good.

When I moved in there was a great atmosphere, lots of laughter. Our Head of Home was approachable he often would eat with us (the residents) likewise the Head of Care and always had time for us. We had a good day centre with lots of activists, we had an IT Technician who assisted with computer problems taught us to use software and make our own personal cards. We had Overseas Volunteers who stayed 6 months sometimes more they lived in house, and assisted with care mostly and enjoyed going out on trips and shopping with us down town. We had fancy dress parties, discos, fundraising events everyone jointed in friends and family came as well. There were trips to the coast, theatre, sporting events places of interested, the pub in evening sometimes although we had bar which was opened twice a week and for in house events. The down side was there were only 2 baths and 2 showers in the building between 30 residents, some rooms did not have toilet I was lucky I had a toilet and basin attached in an en-suite.

Over the years Seven Springs has gone downhill in many respects. The good atmosphere and laughter has gone. We are now Service Users with a Service Manager and a Care Supervisor they are more office bound. Our bar has gone and so have the parties. The Overseas Volunteers have also been stopped so it is more difficult to trips out as support workers tell us they are too busy often.
